Khajuraho is a town in Madhya Pradesh, India located about 620 kilometres (385 mi) south-east of New Delhi, the Capital of India. Khajuraho is one of the most popular tourist destinations and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples which are famous for their erotic sculptures.

Khajuraho temples depict a distinct pattern of art and temple architecture which show the rich and creative period India witnessed during the Chandella rule. This one of the "Seven Wonders of India" was anciently known as "Kharjuravāhaka" which means "kharjura = date palm" and "vahaka = one who carries" in sanskrit.

Khajuraho temples are scattered over an area of about 20 square kilometres. These temples present a wonderful blend of architectural and sculptural fineness, representing one of the greatest examples of Indian art. There were over 80 Hindu temples initially out of which only 25 temples could be preserved till date while rest are ruins. The temples at Khajuraho are grouped into three geographical divisions: western, eastern and southern. Few of them are Lalgun Mahadev (Shiva), Lakshman Vaikuntha (Vishnu), Devi Jagadambi (Parvati), Chitragupta (Surya), Kandariya Mahadeva (Shiva), Adinath (Jina), Chaturbhuja (Vishnu), Duladeo (Shiva) and many more. The Chausath-Yogini, Brahma and Mahadeva temples are of granite while others are built with fine grained sandstone, buff, pink or pale yellow in colour.

  • Khajuraho Statues and carvings

The famously known erotic art in Khajuraho temples are restricted to the outskirts of the temple structure. They are not contained inside the temple or near the deities. There are many interpretations of these carvings. One may interpret that one must leave his or her sexual desires outside the temple or deity is not affected by sexual desires, etc. Few of the carvings contain sexual themes while rest depict the everyday life of the commoner like women putting on makeup, musicians, potters, farmers, and other folk.
