Situated in the northwest part of Rajasthan, Bikaner is a desert town in the middle of the Thar Desert. The town is known for its rich Rajput culture and has some of the most beautiful palaces and richly sculptured temples of red and yellow sand stones. Tourists from all across visit Bikaner to get a feel of the desert and the culture and lifestyle of the people here.

Like any other desert town, the city experiences extreme weather with very hot summers and chilly winters. During the summer months, the days are extremely hot, although the nights become pleasant. Bikaner History
The Bikaner city was founded by Rao Bikaji in 1488. Bikaji was the one of the five sons of Rao Jodhaji, the founder of Jodhpur.

It is said that once Rao Jodhaji passed an insensitive remark on Rao Bikaji, which Bikaji could not tolerate and decided to established his own kingdom. Toward the north of Jodhpur he decided to found his kingdom and with the help of 100 cavalry horses and 500 soldiers, he established his kingdom on 84 villages.

When Bikaji died in 1504 his rule had extended to over 3000 villages. Modern Bikaner is a foresight ness of Maharaja Gagan Singh, who transforms Bikaner from principality to a premier princely state.

    Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum:
    This museum was established in 1932, on the eve of Maharaja Gagan Singh's golden Jubilee celebration. Consider as a best Museum in the state, Rajasthan. In this museum one can see the archaeological discoveries from Harrapan and early Gupta period. Old paintings, terracotta, pottery, carpets coins and ancient Rajput weapons also display in the museum.

    Lalgarh Palace:
    This marvelous Redstone building was built in 1902 by Maharaja Gagan Singh in the memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh. This architectural wonder is a fusion of Rajput, Mughal and European architecture. This Palace was designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, has a wonderful collection of paintings and hunting trophies.

    Bhandeswari:
    This temple is dedicated to Sumati Nath Ji, the 5th Tirthankar of the Jain Religion. This oldest monument of Bikaner was built in 15th century. The beauty of the temple is the mirror work and gold leaf paintings on the wall of temple.

    Shiv Bari Temple:
    This temple is situated 6 km away from the Bikaner city. This Lord Shiva temple was built by Maharaja Doongar Singh in the memory of his father Maharaja Lal Singh, in 9th century. The beautiful wall painting of Nandi bull facing a Shiva Lingam is a main allure of the temple.

    Jain Havelis:
    Actually these ancient mansions were the symbol of wealth and prosperity of noble and powerful people of the town, they known for their opulent life style. Bikaner is full of such beautiful Havelis.

    Gajner wildlife sanctuary:
    This sanctuary is 32 km from the Bikaner and can be visited by Jeep with a guide. One can get a chance to face to face with Nilgai, black Buck, wild boar and many more other animals, including migrated birds, who houses the forest in the winter.
  • Fairs & Festivals of Bikaner

    The Camel Festival, held in the month of January, is the most exciting festival. Competitions related to camels like camel races, milking, dancing, etc., make this festival even more interesting.

    Kolayat Festival is the holy festival when the people take a dip in the holy water of the Kolayat Lake. It normally takes place on the full-moon night of the Hindu month Kartik (November).

    Gangaur Festival, dedicated to Goddess Parvati, is an 18-day long spring festival celebrated during the month of April.
