The city of Ajmer lies in the heart of Rajasthan, some 130 km west of Jaipur. Literally an oasis surrounded by the rocky Aravalli hills Ajmer is a major tourist destination because of its eventful history, spiritual sites and the neighbouring village of Pushkar.

A visit to Ajmer - one of the finest tourist attractions in India, will lead you to discover a different facet of the nation's history. Some of the major tourist attractions in Ajmer include Pushkar and the Dargah Shareef of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. A town in the state of Rajasthan near Ajmer, Pushkar is located about 14 km away, and is a prime tourist destination. The Pushkar Lake and the 14th century Hindu temple dedicated to Brahma are the two main tourist attractions here. The annual Camel Fair is another popular event that attracts several tourists from various parts of the country.

Ajmer History
Ajmer was founded by Ajayadeva, an 11th-century local Rajput ruler. It was shortly annexed by Delhi Sultanate in 1193, but returned to the local rulers, upon payment of tribute. Ajmer was also sacked by Mohammed Ghori in one of the many raids carried out by him on India. Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, the patron Saint of Ajmer, came here from Persia at the end of the 12th century. Ajmer became the part of the mighty Mughal Empire during the medieval period and was an important military center. Military campaigns against local Rajput rulers were initiated from Ajmer. Akbar built a fort here. The first contact between the Mughals and the British also happened in Ajmer, when Jahangir met Sir Thomas Roe in 1616. Shahjahan built marble pavilions around the Ana Sagar Lake in the 17th century. The Scindia rulers of Gwalior took over Ajmer, which was later taken over by the British in 1818. The British founded the famous Mayo College, a prestigious school here, in 1875.

    Dargah-e-Sharif Ajmer: Located at the foot of a barren hill, the Dargah-e- Sharif is the place where the Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chisti's mortal remains lie buried. The Dargah has a beautiful marble dome and a courtyard, surrounded by a silver platform. It's believed that the tomb is a place of wish fulfillment for those who pray with devout and pure hearts. People of all religious faiths visit the Dargah and make offerings of rose and jasmine flowers to seek the blessings of the Khawaja. The famous annual 'Urs' festival is a major tourist attraction of Ajmer when millions of devotees from around the world visit the Dargah to pay their homage and seek blessing of Khawaja.

    Taragarh Fort: The 7th century Taragarh Fort (Star Fort) was built by Ajaipal Chauhan, the founder of the city of Ajmer. Perched on a high hill, the fort offers a breathtaking view of Ajmer city.

    Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra: The Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhonpra is a small and beautiful mosque, situated on the outskirts of Ajmer. Built by Alauddin Khilji, a Delhi Sultant king, it's one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture. The mosque is built on pillars and surprisingly no two pillars are alike. Its archways and the pillars are finely engraved with Kufi and Jughra inscriptions from the holy Quran.

    Ana Sagar Lake: A beautiful artificial lake, Ana Sagar Lake was built by Anaji between 1135-1150 AD. Later the Mughal Emperors made additional constructions to beautify the Lake. While the Baradari, a beautiful marble pavilion, was built by Shah Jehan, Jehangir added the Daulat Bagh Gardens.

    Other not to be missed tourist attractions in Ajmer include Circuit House, Mayo College, Daulat Khana, Daulat Bagh, Akabr's Palace, Shah Jehan Mosque and the Museum. Situated in the heart of Ajmer, the 19th century Nasiyan Jain Temple is also worth paying a visit.
