Chamba provides a glimpse into the ancient cultural heritage and architecture of the Pahari people, preserved in the erstwhile Chamba Hill State. It is a unique place and a must for any serious traveler. This land of mystic serenity, enchanting vistas, refreshing air, lofty mountain passes and slopes provides ample opportunities for nature lovers.
The town is located over a mountain spur overlooking the Ravi River, locally known as Irawati. The valley is located between the Dhauladhar and the Pir Panjal ranges of the Himalayas. The town was founded in 920 A.D. by Raja Sahil Verman and named after his daughter, Champavati. The capital of the hill state was moved from Bharmour to Chamba at that time.
In the center of the town lies the grassy public promenade, referred to as Chaugan. In and around the town are numerous ancient temples built in the local hill-style architecture.
Chamba houses some most beautiful hill stations like Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Bharmour, Banikhet, Kala tope, Manimahesh, Triund etc.Travel hills station Dalhousie and Khajjiar the famous honeymoon destinations of Himachal,India. Chamba History
Chamba was a part of the Mughal Empire and later became the part of various Sikh kingdoms. It was finally taken over by the British and became a part of the state of Himachal Pradesh.Raja Varman who named the town after his daughter Champavati.The small town of Chamba is located amidst the Shivalik ranges and is famous for its temples. -

Lakshminarayanan Temple
There are six ancient temples in a group, carved in stone, with rising vimanas. Built around the 8th century AD, these temples are dedicated to both Shiva and Vishnu. The Lakshminarayan Temple is the oldest in this group, is beautifully ornamented.
Bhuri Singh Museum
It is a collection of exquisite miniatures from the Kangra, Basholi and Chamba schools of painting. There are also murals and paintings from the Rang Mahal Palace which were demolished in fire.
Chaugan
A large grassland forms the heart of the town and the axis of all its cultural activities. Every year, the colourful Minjar Mela celebrating the harvest is held here.
Hari Rai Temple
This is a 11th century temple located near the Chaugan. It has an impressive bronze image of the Chaturbhuj - the four armed Vishnu, enshrined in the sanctum.
Chamunda Devi Temple
Chamunda Devi Temple is settled just 1 km from the Chaugan. The temple overlooking the river is dedicated to the goddess Chamunda Devi, the temple is decorated with fine wood carvings.
Kalatope Khajjiar Sanctuary
30-km from Dalhousie to Chamba along the eastbound road from Gandhi Chowk is a short but steep scaling, which leads to the Kalatope wildlife sanctuary, from where one can walk into an alluring path.
